THANK YOU for the rapid, and enlightening, response. I am somehow glad my old gggrandpa didn't suffer through the scourge of the smallpox epidemic. I have been to the family plot in Carroll County Tennessee, and his gravesite is not there. With the information as provided by you, I may be successful in researching up around Knoxville. This was a fairly rabid unionist area during the War; do you suppose brother John would have had to inter NATHAN in an unmarked grave?
I also had a great grandfather who was captured by the Yankees on Jan 1st during the Battle of Murfreesboro, where the 13th was headed. His name was AMBROSE LEE T SIKES (SYKES) who was only 14 at the time and was living in far eastern Maury County. Family lore tells us that he took critically ill and that he was paroled to the care of his sisters living in Union controlled Nashville. Is there a process that I can follow to get his Oklahoma gravesite marked as a Confederate veteran?
