This could be your Uncle:

J. B. James, 25, Private, Captain Graham’s Company, Russell’s Battalion of Partisan Rangers,* enlisted September 8, 1863 by Capt. F. J. Graham at Stevenson[?], Ala., value of horse $170, horse equipment $15, recorded at the December 31, 1863 muster as “Deserted,” no further records

* This company subsequently became Company E, 4th Regiment (Russell’) Arkansas Cavalry

Note, there are no further company muster rolls in the files, therefore we do not know his subsequent service. It is more that likely he returned to his command

Brief History
4th (Russell's) Cavalry Regiment was formed at Murfreesboro, Tennessee, in December, 1862, by consolidating four companies from the 3rd (Forrest's Old) Tennessee Cavalry Regiment, six companies of the 4th Alabama Battalion, and the Russell Rangers or 15th Tennessee Cavalry Battalion. Its members were from the counties of Madison, Wilcox, Monroe, Cherokee, Jackson, Marshall, and Lawrence. It was included in the surrender on May 4, 1865.[1]
