From what I can glean from reading, when Wheelers Cavalry came in to Tennessee and captured the Union Stores in McMinnville he was then to start for Murfreesboro. Gen. John Kelly put together a company of Scouts from different regiments numbering about 100. They were to recon in the direction of Tullahoma. Coming from McMinnville they would have traversed the area of Hillsboro, Pelham and Decherd. It was just outside of Pelham in the small hamlet of Hawkersville going toward Decherd. Here they ran into Brixey and his men. He was sent back to Manchester on a mule as I understand.
Somewhere I had read that the 4th Ga Cav were the ones to capture Brixey. Since Kellys scouts were on a recon mission I just assumed that they turned him over to other CSA authority and went on with their mission. Perhaps elements of the 4th Ga were in Kellys Scouts as well. Captain Peter Mastin of the 58th Alabama Cav. was one of those scouts and recorded the event ever so briefly. This might explain why different CSA regiments claim his capture. In any event General John Kelly was killed a couple weeks later at Franklin, Tn. and the Scouts were disbanded.
