Hello,

As best we can determine some 1000 men went out with Forrest. If your ancestor was in the 3rd Tennessee Infantry then he walked out with Forrest as did other infantrymen. We also believe that another 1000 or so men just walked out of the fort after the surrender as the Union Army did a lousy job doing provost duty. This included Brig. Gen. Bushrod Johnson and his staff by the way.
