Re: Company D 63rd Tennessee At Appomattox

During most of the siege of Petersburg, they were two brigades of Tennesseans, with the army of northern Virginia. One of those came from Beauregard‘s department, which included Bushrod johnson’s Tennessee brigade. The 63rd was part of that brigade.

The other brigade was archers Tennessee brigade, which had been a part of the ANV’s for many years.

In 1865 the true brigades were combined and were commanded by McComb.

On April 2, 1865, the sixth army corps broke through the confederate lunch at Petersburg, and attacked the brigades of Macomb and Joseph Davis from the rear. Joseph Davis’s brigade was nearly nearly all captured. Some of the Tennessee brigade escaped and participated in the Appomattox campaign.

During the Appomattox campaign, the divisions of Wilcox and Henry Heth were so reduced in numbers that they were attached to longstreets first army corps. Hills third army corps has ceased to exist as an independent body.
