Elements of the 8th 9th and the 13th Tn Cav USA were present at Morgan's undoing. Historians agree he was shot through the sternum by a Pvt Andrew Campbell, a confederate deserter and galvanised yankee. Campbell threw the "Thunderbolt of the Confederacy" acroos his saddle and paraded his body through Greeneville. When he becamed bored with that he dumped Morgan into a muddy ditch. Lt. Col. John Bell Brownlow (one of Parson Brownlow's sons) CO of the 9th took several of Morgan's personal items as mementos but returned the General's uniform to afford him a decent burial and kept Morgan's pipe and pocket knife
