The subject of the Confederate MoH came up, I think last year, on the Alabama board. I would like to let any descendents of the men who recieved this honor to know that while no medals were ever stamped and actually given to the men for lack of resources there is a certificate available from the SCV that one can get to at least mark the men who are carried on what is known as "The Confederate Roll of Honor". It is now considered by the SCV that these men are not Medal of Honor winners because most have no written account of why they were selected. I understand that position is done to meet the standards of the U.S. Medal of Honor which requires a written account of a recipients actions. However, as much as I love the SCV I have to disagree on the neccesity of that as I'm sure the soldiers who actually fought these battles were capable of making a proper judgement of what honor on the battlefield was.
After reading Mr. Clemmer's book I determined to get a certificate for Richard Chaddick. I called SCV Headquarters I know at least a half dozen times before I could convince them they even offered this certificate even though it is listed on their website as being available. Finally someone went down and dug around until the certificates were located. To the knowledge of the folks then working at Elm Springs I was the 1st SCV member to apply for this certificate. I just hope I'm not the last. I recieved the certificate last October.
I wish that more descendents of these men would apply for this and at least have something, even if its only a certificate, to show what their ancestors were selected for.
