This document gives background on the 1st TN National Guard USA and Goldman Bryson, toward the end of the first paragraph it goes like this.

In 1863 Captain Bryson made himself obnoxious to the rebel element in his locality and in the language of the country was obliged to "lay-out."
Sometime in August of that year he began to gather some of the union men about him and form a legion. The state of the country was such that it's excistence was divided and the more un-unstable. I cannot- learn that the Company was ever fully organized but there is no doubt that the officers were Captain Goldman Bryson, 1st Lieutenant James K. Morrow [my 2nd g granduncle] and 2nd Lieutenant A.T. Payne. Late in 1863 Bryson went with his company to Knoxville TN. Where it is claimed it was mustered into service Sept. 29 1863. About November 1st Bryson and his company left Knoxville intending to go into the mountains west of Murphy NC. and recurit a regiment. On the morning of November 3 having halted his men at a place called Beaverdam NC and while they were taking breakfast he was suprised by Col. Vaughans Rebel Regt. which had followed him. Two of his men were killed and 16 captured. The most of them escaped unscathed into the mountains. Bryson told them to scatter where they pleased, he was going to "his den." Bryson made his way over the mountain to his home on Coker Creek. His trail was followed by some rebel Indians and two days after the battle of Beaver Dam, he was killed near his own house.
