Re: Daniel Foster of McMinn Co

Hi Don, and thanks for your efforts in trying to locate Daniel Foster. I have since learned that Daniel's father joined the army soon after Daniel died. A Deed book death notice reads: "devoted to Southern independence, he gave his only son and then volunteered himself. Tribute of Respect to him by Company E, Cav. Batt. at Gordon, Meigs Co." Another source lists him in l6th Battalion (Neal's) Tennessee Cavalry. Company E was organized 07 Aug, l862, and l6th Cav Batt in Oct l862. So Daniel had to have died before one of those dates, since Simpson Foster died l6 Nov l862.

Since his father was such an ardent Southerner, Daniel could have joined the South. On the other hand, his cousin George W. Foster,McMinn Co., according to his nephew, Charles Leslie, "joined the Union because they had the horses". (George, by the way, owned a livery stable.) 5th Tennessee Mounted Infantry Regiment, U.S.A. That rationale about the horses is an odd tidbit for your interest in Union soldiers from the South.

Many thanks for your help. You have given me some resources to explore. The prison camp death seems to offer clues. I was excited about D. L. Foster until I realized the County name mixup. Everyone is so helpful, and I'm very grateful. Kathleen Bates
