Sept 27 1871 Lt Col David M Nelson 9th Tn Cav US was challenged by Maj Gen James Holt Clanton CS on Gay St. in Knoxville, Tn. Clanton pulled a revolver Nelson, unarmed retrived a shotgun from the St. Nicolas Saloon hid behind a beer barrel on the sidewalk and shot Clanton dead.
Gen. Daniel W Adams killed a Natchez newpaper editor James Hagan in a duel in 1843. Adams claimed Hagan sullied the reputation of his father.
1888 Adams brother Gen. Wirt Adams and newspaper editor John Martin killed each other on the streets of Jackson Mississippi after a long running fued.
General St John Richardson Liddell killed a fellow student in a duel at West Point.

Lt. Col John Bell Brownlow 9th Tn Cav US son of the Parson killed a fellow student at Emory & Henry. His attorney, David M Nelson's father.
MG John A Wharton was killed April 6, 1865 in a Houston, Tx hotel by Col Baylor.
On one ocassion Forrest was shot by a subordinate, the General managed to cut his assailents throat with a pocket knife.
