What's a Volunteer ADC?

I see in the order of battle that Louisiana militia BGen James de Berty Trudeau (profiled in Bruce Allardice's "More Generals in Gray") served as a "Volunteer Aide de Camp" to Beauregard after the latter assumed command on day two of the Battle of Shiloh. What exactly was a Volunteer ADC used for and how did their duties differ from other staff officers? I also heard somewhere that Trudeau, Confederate arty chief at Island No. 10, served as an ADC to A.S. Johnston between the fall of Isl. 10 and Shiloh. Anybody know the details of how Trudeau came to be vol adc to both, if in fact he was? Supposedly Trudeau was seriously wounded at Shiloh while serving in this capacity. Any details or even speculation would be welcome.

thanks!
Mike
