St John Richardson Liddell was for a time an unpaid aid to William Hardee. They were acquainted before the war. Liddell traveled to Richmond to offer his services. He had been kicked out of West Point for wounding a fellow student in a duel. He was at 1st Manassas in an unknown role. Could not get an appointment of any kind became an unpaid ADC and courier between Hardee in Missouri and Richmond. "Colonel" Liddell acted in the same roll for AS Johnson. Patrick Cleburn praised his efforts at Perryville. he lost abot 50% at Chickamauga He despised Bragg transfered to La. and given a few 100 Cavalry under Richard Taylor and found Taylor more dispicable than Bragg. Surrendered at Ft Blakely on Mobile Bay 9 April. Murdered 14 Feb 1870 by Lt Col Charles Long 17th La Inf, purported to be a jealous husband.
LIDDELL was well connected and wealthy as were the likes of George Bibb Crittenden perhaps not worthy of command but useful in other ways.
