Sir: thank you for your interesting response. Would it be fair to say that Volunteer ADCs were like "free lancers" who went wherever they wished and offered their services to whomever, since they were not affiliated with a regular organization? If they were unpaid, were they angling for a command appointment based on OJT performance? Was this a common practice in both armies?
