Brownlow was to Unionism what the Pope is to Catholicism. I am currently working on the tales of Southern born Unionists. The Parson was a Methodist Circut Rider Newspaper publisher and passionate Republican. He established the Knoxville Whig when Knoxville had a population of 3500 the Whig had a circulation of more than 12,000 North and South. CS authorities shut him down, arrested him, and finally deported to Ohio in 1861. With the fall of Knoxville to Burnside in 1863. Brownlow was back and his paper was renamed the Knoxville Whig & Rebel Ventalator. His editorials called for the quiet murder of sucessionists and that they be buried deep in the woods. After the war he became Governor then US Senator. His portrait in the capital was recently restored requiring the removal of several layers of tobacco spittle. I would be honored to have a a copy of the CDV and wonder who else you may have.
If you'd like to know more about Brownlow read EAST TENNESSEE IN THE CIVIL WAR by O.P. Temple it is in reprint from Overmountain Press Johnson City, Tennessee. RRF
