Most Southern states did not disband their militias - it's just that some units went dormant while others did not. The state laws and militia districts were still there (and they are today for that matter).

The John Brown Affair certainly brought about an active militia resurgence but for those units that never went dormant, that just meant even more drill than theyw were having already.

There is an excellent 4 volume history of the Georgie Militia that came out a couple years ago.
