Re: Barteau's 22nd Tn. Cavelry, CSA

Barteau's regiment was in Samuel Ferguson's Brigade from the summer of 1863 up to Janury 1864, along with the 2nd Alabama and 56th Alabama regiments, and the 17th Tennessee and 12th Mississippi Battalions. My ggg grandfather Weatherford was in the 17th Tennessee, and his two brothers were in the 12th Mississippi. The Brigade was generally located in Northeast Mississippi, around the Okalona area. In October, it did move into North Alabama for several weeks. During that time, Barteau's Regiment and the 2nd Alabama inflicted a serious defeat on the Union 1st Alabama Cavalry at Vincent's Crossroads near the Alabama Mississippi border.

The Brigade was in Southwest Tennessee, and saw some action at Saulsberry, in early December 1863, when it covered Forrest's entry into West Tennessee on a recruiting mission. I have seen orders and dispatches in the offical records that indicate the Brigade may have crossed back over the border into Tennessee just after Christmas, when Forrest was returning to Mississippi, again apparently to act as cover for him. Perhaps the event you refer to happened at that time.

Once Forrest returned, the cavalry commands in Mississippi were split in two, with Forrest to command the north and Stephen Lee (who previously commanded all cavalry in Mississippi) to comand in the south of the state. Ferguson's Brigade was sent to Lee in late January 1864, but was ordered to leave Barteau's Regiment with Forrest. Ferguson's Brigade received a new regment, the 11th Mississippi, in its place (and the 17th Tennessee Battalion was combined with the 17th Mississippi Battalion to form the 9th Mississippi).

As an aside, I had King ancestors in Fayette County during the Civil War, but have been unable to verify if my ggg grandfather Edward King served.
