The 3rd Maryland Battery attached to Reynold's brigade was really composed of lots of East Tennessee folk.

Vaughn’s brigade had recruited in Unionist-dominated East Tennessee. A mixture of mounted infantry and cavalry regiments comprised the brigade. At Piedmont, Vaughn had the:

Vaughn’s men had left their horses in Bristol, Tennessee, when the brigade departed for the Shenandoah Valley. For the next month and a half, Vaughn’s Brigade fought as infantry.
They got their horses back July 22 near Winchester after Early's raid on Washington City.
