Re: Mounted Infantry Vs. Dis - Mounted Cavalry?

One of ggg grandfathers and two of his brothers were in the CSA cavalry. Particularly during the Atlanta campaign, their brigade (Ferguson's Brigade) often fought dismounted in a defensive role against Union infantry, or even offensively. Such cavalry would fight at a disadvantage, since about a quarter of the men would have to stay with the horses, and the cavalry brigades would lack the heavier artillery often possessed by their infantry counterparts.

It should be noted that the Confederates had a mystic for cavalry, and raised a high proportion of cavalry regiments. (I think Texas actually raised more cavalry than infantry regiments). A number of these cavalry regiments were permanently dismounted and assigned to infantry brigades. For example, the Texas brigade in Cleburne's infantry division included several "cavalry" regiments. Sometimes, in tables of organization or orders of battle, the phrase "dismounted" will be included in such regiments' designations.
