My great great grandfather supposedly was involved in patrolling the streets of Memphis after it came under Union control as part of a Home Guard unit. Our family history states that his parents actually set up business in Memphis and their two boys were in the home guard. I have not found much information on Home Guard units other than colored and Indian Home Guard units of which he would not have been in. I was wondering if anyone knows anything about Home Guards and in particular Home Guard units in the Memphis area.

Were members of Home Guard participants actually considered soldiers? Of course in later years he and his brother considered themselves soldiers but I don't think they ever saw and action in battle.
