Indeed, the standard line of battle formation was a two rank line,the soldiers elbows lightly touching(not 'shoulder to shoulder'as many people assume). In skirmish order it expanded into one rank with 5 paces between each man. For road marches ther usual formation was a column of fours. A full strength regiment(1000 men=officers)would therefor occupy approx. a 1000 foot frontage.
