Co. "D", 5th Tennessee Cavalry Battalion was recruited in Hawkins and Hancock Counties. Service files for James M. and John Moneyhon are found with that company, as well as the Tennessee cavalry regiment which the battalion later joined.
The new designation was Co. "C", Ashby's 2nd Tennessee Cavalry Regiment.
