The regiment was not divided by companies. Due to an emergency situation in the Shenandoah Valley, in May 1864 all men available were dismounted and sent to Virginia. While General Vaughn and his men campaigned in Virginia and Maryland, other members of the brigade collected in East Tennessee. Some of Vaughn's Brigade were serving with John Hunt Morgan when he was killed on Sept. 4, 1864. The remainder of the brigade returned from Virginia in late October 1864.
