Do we know where this young man lived in 1860? Has anyone checked for an Arkansas pension application? The NPS index includes the following:

  • J. M. Langston, Massenburg's Georgia Battery
  • J. M. Langston, Co. "D", Cocke's Arkansas Regiment
  • J. M. Langston, Co. "G", 35th Mississippi Regiment
  • James Langston, Co. "G", 11th Mississippi Cavalry
  • James M. Langston, Co. "A", 1st Florida Cavalry
  • James Langston, Co. "E/B", 18th Alabama Partisan Rangers
  • James M. Langston, Co. "A", 3rd Confederate Engineers

With the little I know about him now, it's possible his family moved south or west before the war. Or, he may have joined a Confederate unit that happened to camp near his home. Of the seven listed, the only unit recruited anywhere near Cleveland TN was the Alabama Partisan Rangers company from Jackson County.

I'm not seeking to contradict anything already stated here; just attempting to be thorough. When someone this young enrolled, it was usually towards the end of the war, and those records are even less complete than usual. For that reason, if Langston did enlist, it may be that the only surviving evidence would be in the form of a pension application. I'm assuming that he waould have applied as a resident of Arkansas.
