Both service records for H. L. Swift list him as a private. He entered Confederate service from Putnam County as a member of Co. "I", 25th Tennessee Regiment. Swift later reenlisted in Co. "I", Dibrell's 13th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment. He also received a military service pension from the State of Tennessee.
