I believe he would have come under immense political pressure to mount a rescue operation. I'm not convinced he would have done so however. He was subjected to similar pressure to defend Nashville and withdraw.

If I remember it correctly, Buell was moving south toward Nashville at the time. I can't see A S Johnson mounting a rescue operation if Buell's army was anywhere near.
