Re: Lt. Alvan Edward Read, 7th Tenn. Cav.

Hello. If you have not, you may wish to post in Louisiana. They have a more active site.
Also, if the 7th Tenn. was the CSA one, isn't that Nathan Bedford Forrest
and his men? To put it in today's terms, those guys were really "bad dudes." They were the ones who would ride to battle as fast as they could get there, dismount with one man holding the horses for himself and three others. Then they would fight. Forrest is a man whose tactics are still studied today is what I have been told.
There is a story up in an Illinois site that talks about the 7th Tenn. robbing the Yankee supply/ payroll train as it rolls out of Alabama headed for Tenn. Forrest and his men took many prisoners that day.
Then traded them back for some of their men.
If this man rode with Forrest, I can promise you he was well respected for doing it.
Good luck!

P.S. I know about the 7th Tenn because my great aunt's father-in-law, Lt. Wm. Herron, rode with Forrest. He was one of his Lts. who was in charge of the supply train. Currently I have a marker ordered for Herron's grave to denote his militay service. Hopefully we can get it placed this spring.
