Thank you for your reply, Alan Pitts! I do know that Josiah was manning an ammunition wagon, when he went over a river. The enemy started shooting and he dove into the water. Everytime he tried to come up, they would shoot again and under water he would go. He wasn't heard from from that time until he married my Grandmother in Iowa in 1871. The Civil War Papers I have state, "Sept. & Oct, 1864, asbent, remarks: D.S. Camp Smith, Nashville, Tenn."
Noone seems to know where in Nashville and what it was used for.
