The Tennessee in the Civil War Message Board

Middle Tennessee CWRT September 2006 Meeting

The next meeting of the Middle Tennessee Civil War Round Table is scheduled for Tuesday, September 19, 2006 (7:00 P.M.) at Bradley Academy. Anyone interested in open discussion of the Civil War topics with a local flavor are welcome to attend.

This month’s featured speaker is Mr. Mike Peake of the Clarksville CWRT. He will tell use the story of the Thirty-second Indiana Infantry, the first German regiment from that state. German immigrants played an important role in the Union war effort, and many of these men banded together into ethnically distinct units like the Thirty-second Indiana.

Two companies of the Thirty-second Indiana Infantry had their baptism of fire at Rowlett’s Station in Kentucky. This somewhat forgotten battle foreshadowed the steel that these men would show on most of the major battlefields of the Western Theater and inspired one of the survivor’s to create a monument that stands as one of the oldest of the Civil War.

Mr. Peake will weave a tale of how the men of the Thirty-second Indiana and other immigrant regiments proved to be some of the most effective units that served the cause of the Union and carried it to victory.

The Middle Tennessee Civil War Round Table meets every third Tuesday of the month at Bradley Academy, located on Academy Street in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Membership applications are available at each meeting. Membership costs $10 per year for individuals and $15 for families. All meetings are open to the public regardless of membership status. Each meeting will include time for interested parties to share stories and memorabilia from the Civil War era with the membership.
