Are any of you familiar with the families of Civil War veterans changing their last names after the war? One responder on this board (R.K.) has said his family did this. My family went from Greer to Grear after the war. It probably was just an error on record keeping by the county courthouse in Lauderdale County TN where my ancestor's widoow and son moved after the war. I just wonder if veteran's families lived in fear of Federal reprisals and how often this may have led them to change surnames.
