The Tennessee in the Civil War Message Board

Ms. Maddie,

Being the father of an 11 year old boy I would like to try and answer your question. There was a large part of the people of the state of Tennessee who remained loyal to the United States government during the war. These folks were found in their greatest numbers in the east part of Tennessee. Their loyalty helped smooth the way.

There were many army units, called Regiments, raised in Tennessee who fought for the Union. Also, Andrew Johnson, the man who became President when Mr. Lincoln was killed was from Tennessee. He had remained loyal through out the war and he helped Tennessee be returned to the Union as quickly as possible.

That is a short version of the events and hopefully you will get a good grade on your report. Always remember not to copy other people's answers and check and double-check what you learn.

Best wishes for your success. We need more good historians!
