Darron,

Co. K of the 12th Tennessee Infantry was raised in Gibson County. In July, 1861, the regiment was reported at the Camp of Instruction at Union City, Tennessee. In September, it moved to Columbus, Kentucky. I believe it saw its first combat at Belmont, Missouri on Nov. 7, 1861. Since the date of death was prior to Belmont, it is most likely that one John W. Lewis died of one of the many diseases that plagued army camps of the times. Hope this has been of some help.
