Thank you Len for this most informative information on the Battle of Saltville. I know that thousands of men and women died in that horrible war. I still feel sadness when I think of my Captain Gourley dying in that cold, icy, rainy place, and being buried in a muddy hole in the ground. At least, after the war, he was dis-interred and re-interred at Knoxville National Cemetery. I have just had a new stone put on his grave. I went to see it, and it looks great!! I wonder what happened to Captain Gideon? According to Captain Gourley's last letter to his wife, before he died, he had a premonition that he might not see home (Elizabethton, Carter County, TN) again. He was a very educated man for his time. School, college, teacher, etc., it makes me wonder what if.............
