Thanks Len: For years I believed, like you, that this was my man, but for one thing. I sent to the National Archives for all info. One of the roster cards said that he died in Monroe City on Feb 8, 1862.
Oral history said that one of the brothers fought with Ashby's Tn Cavalry and this all fits except the line on 1 roster card that said he died. He definitely lived until 1912. If this is a mistake, it would clear up years of searching. They may have thought he was going to die and didn't.
This has been one of the hardest things I have tried to do. I wonder if there is somewhere I can look to see if he actually survived.
I know from family history that John walked with a limp the rest of his life, so he received an injury somehow.
