Major William C. Morelock Grave

My wife is the great-great granddaughter of Major William C Morelock Company F(Men from Monroe County, Tennessee), 3rd (Lillard's) Tennessee Mounted Infantry(CSA). He fought at 1st Manassas, Vicksburg, East Tennessee, and Southwest Virginia. On July 4th 1864 He resigned his commission and proceeded to go back to Monroe County to live as far as we have been able to find out he was killed in North Carolina on Sept 1st 1864 and never made it home. (The story goes that he was killed by bushwhackers - (Union?? or Confederate??) We don't know.)
Has anyone heard of a soldier's grave in North Carolina or along the border of Tennessee that might be his? His family knew that he had died in N.C. because when the court was petitioned over some land this fact was mentioned.
Thanks for any help or info.
