Street Fight Nashville - Apr 1-3, 1864

Hi folks,

I'm looking for any accounts of an altercation on the streets of Nashville, Tennessee, that occurred between the 1st and 3rd of April, 1864 between a Union soldier of the 22nd Indiana Infantry (US), John McPike and a Nashville citizen, who may have been a Confederate parolee or guerilla, by the name of "Casey". According to witnesses, this fight occurred after a group of Southern men shouted at two Union soldiers that they would be "whupped" by General Joe Johnston. The Union soldiers replied and John McPike and "Casey" drew pistols and fired at approximately the same instant. McPike was seriously wounded in the upper thigh, while Casey was killed.

If anyone has access to period newpapers or official reports that might reference this matter I'd appreciate any information you can provide.

John McPike is my gg-grandfather.

Jim Martin
