Mr. Thompson,

There were two 4th Tennessee Cavalry Regiments (CSA). The first was Murray's and the second was Starne's/McLemore's. The 4th (Murray's) Tennessee Cavalry Regiment was organized and ultimately evolved into the 8th (Baxter Smith's) Tennessee Cavalry Regiment (date unknown). Neither of these regiments should have "Forrest" in their unit name. None of the companies were from Texas.

The only Tennessee Cavalry Regiment that should have "Forrest" in its name is the 3rd (Forrest's Old) Tennessee Cavalry Regiment (also called 18th Battalion, 26th Battalion, Balch's Battalion, and McDonald's Battalion). Captain Gould's Company D of this regiment was a Texas company that surrendered at Fort Donelson and later became Company K, 23rd Texas Cavalry Regiment. It never served with the regiment after the surrender at Fort Donelson. Neither did Captain Davis' Company I. These men were from Alabama and later became Company I, 12th Alabama Cavalry.

I hope this helps.
