In looking over a November 4, 1862 military pass signed at Fort Henry by Capt. Pliny Norcross of the 13th Wisconsin for a local Kentucky citizen named Humphrey Lawrence, I noticed the pass contained the words "guards & grand guards." Has anyone ever heard of "grand guards" before? If so, what are grand guards?
