The Tennessee in the Civil War Message Board

Middle Tennessee CWRT Novermber 2007 Meeting

The next meeting of the Middle Tennessee CWRT will be Tuesday November 20, 2007. The meeting will begin at 7 PM in Bradley Academy. This meeting will feature a group discussion on the topic of Women in the Civil War.

Women had a profound impact on the Civil War even as the conflict brought great changes to their way of life. As men went off to war, women had to take on new roles. They became the heads of their households. They went to work in factories and hospitals. Some women even put on a uniform and went to war.

Women struggled to keep family farms and businesses solvent while they worked to keep their families from being torn apart by war. Women also exercised unprecedented political power. They organized relief societies like the U.S. Sanitary Commission, kept their husbands and sons in touch with home through letters, and demanded that their government address their needs.

We will spend the evening discussing the myriad of ways that women shaped the war, and ponder the ways that the war changed the lives of women, for good or ill, forever.

The Middle Tennessee Civil War Round Table meets every third Tuesday of the month at Bradley Academy, located on Academy Street in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Membership applications are available at each meeting. Membership costs $10 per year for individuals and $15 for families. All meetings are open to the public regardless of membership status. Each meeting will include time for interested parties to share stories and memorabilia from the Civil War era with the membership.
