Some of the regiments who fought at at the seige of Knoxville are not listed or given credit because they are newly-formed regiments. Burnside after the seige wrote "..our force at this time in Knoxville was about 12,000 effective men, exclusive of the new recruits of loyal Tennesseean's." Several books have been written about the seige, and you should have no problems finding sources which list the regiments who were there; however, the Eighth and Ninth Tennessee Cavalry Regiments were present at the seige, but are not mentioned in any such lists. Diaries, letters, and regimental records clearly show they were there. Many local men of the area enlisted, who had shunned enlistment before, when they heard the news that Longstreet was headed to Knoxville. Several regiments were formed during this time. These were the "new recruits of loyal Tennesseean's"
