Gardner --

The 1840 census for Morgan County AL lists only households for James and John Sawyer(s). Larkin must not have remained in Alabama for long, and I'm curious as to why he would have taken the family to that part of Tennessee. Many attractive farm sites can be found in the French Broad and the Holston valleys, but the tide of population movement ran in the opposite direction.

If I may submit a personal opinion, the Confederacy could have used this officer's services, and as a Southerner I am saddened by his choice in 1861.
