Wooden Scabbard

Does anyone have any information on Wooden Scabbards that were used early in the War by the Confederates? Am I correct to assume that perhaps only junior officers would have carried them? The reason for my question is that NOT too long ago I saw a Confederates sword along with a wooden scabbard on display at a Northern State Capitol, that stated that the sword was given to US Grant by one of the Confederate leaders at Fort Donelson. I have a hard time trying to picture General Pillow or Buckner with a wooden scabbard. Rather I believe that this sword belonged to a junior Confederate Officer who died at Camp Chase and was probably either from Alabama or Tennessee. Camp Chase kept many of the swords and scabbards of the Confederates who died at Chase. They were kept in a special building within the Camp and after the War they were taken to the basement of the State Capitol and in 1906 while doing some late spring cleaning all of the items were discovered. This would be the same room that the missing Camp Chase letters would be found. Some years later the Ohio Historical Society would receive some of the military equipment. It was interesting to note that the sword and scabbard on display at the State Capitol was on loan from the Ohio Historical Society. Since only about a dozen or so Confederate Officers died at Camp Chase during this time period before being taken to Johnson's Island it might be possible to identify the owner with some luck. Thx for any help.
