The USMA Register of Graduates, Class of 1861, in the list of Non-Graduates, of those Admitted as Cadets in 1856:

Samuel C. Williams, Tennessee, Resigned 1861 due to impending Civil War:
Captain, 10 Regiment {Virginia] Muhlenberg Rifles.

Also in the list of non-graduates were fellow CSA generals: John "The Gallant" Pelham and Thomas L. Rosser.

Classmate of Union General Judson Kilpatrick.

A War Department letter of June 6, 1935 notes:

"The name Samuel C. Williams, Captain, Company F, 10th Regiment, Virginia Infantry, C.S.A., appears on a Regimental Return of the organization for the month of June, 1861, with remark:

"Absent and member of State Convention, never having reported for duty.'

"There are no rolls on file in this office of the company covering the period of
of his service, and no other record of him has been found."
