9th Battalion, Tennessee Cavalry (Gantt's)
9th Cavalry Battalion was organized and mustered into Confederate service at Camp Maury, near Nashville, Tennessee, in December, 1861. Its six companies were from Maury, Hickman, and Wayne counties. A seventh company, made up of transfers and men from Hickman County, was added in October, 1864. The unit was assigned to the Western Department, and all but Company C were captured in the fight at Fort Donelson. They were exchanged in September, 1862, remounted in January, 1863, and attached to W.Adams, H.B. Davidson's, Humes', and H.M. Ashby's Brigade. The battalion skirmished the Federals in Mississippi and Louisiana, was involved in the Atlanta Campaign and the defense of Savannah, then part served with Wheeler in Georgia and part in Tennessee. After various engagements in the Carolinas, it surrendered with the Army of Tennessee. The field officers were Lieutenant Colonel George Gantt, and Majors James H. Akin and B.W. Porter.

years, with an aggregate of 964 men. On Sept. 1, it moved into
Kentucky for the defense of Cincinnati against Kirby Smith's
raid, and about the 2Oth of the same month it went to Louis-
ville. In the engagement at Perryville it lost 2 officers

From Feb. until Sept., 1863, it was engaged in building for-

spring of 1864 it received orders to join Gen. Sherman's army
at Kingston, Ga., and the next day after its arrival it par-
ticipated in the engagement at that place. From this time
until after the siege of Atlanta the regiment was in line of
battle almost constantly. It shared in all the movements of
the campaign participated in the actions at Dallas, Lost
mountain, Pine mountain and Atlanta, its ranks being fearfully
thinned during the movement. The regiment then moved into Ten-
nessee and skirmished three days at Columbia. It went into the
battle of Franklin with an aggregate of 225 men and came out
with 112. It fell back with the army to Nashville and partici-
pated in the battle at that place, losing several men. The
regiment followed the retreating Confederates as far as Colum-
bia, where it was consolidated with the 99th Ohio infantry, re-
taining its own name. At the time of the consolidation the
regiment numbered only about 100 men. It then was sent over
into the Carolinas and finally was mustered out at Salisbury,
N. C., June 26, 1865.
