Re: Female Confederate Spy
In Response To: Female Confederate Spy ()

Jeremy, Forgive me but you sparked my interest.Spys were heavily used and there were several top spies on both sides that were women. They blended in and could extract information without being threatening. How many times has a women gotten over on you? Be honest!
I can't say I remembered these two sisters but operating out of Nashville they must of been good or caught since this is the realm of the Army of the Cumberland, Chief of Staff and inteligence expert extraordinaire James A.Garfield, the future 20th president of the United States, territory. He and Col.Dodge, later Gen., are considered by some as the fathers of the present day CIA.They believed in networking information creating organized efforts in both supression and infiltration of enemy spy rings and recruiting those that worked for the Federal payroll. Gen.Grenville Dodge U.S. Head of the Dist.Corinth,MS.even had the gaul to fund his spy rings with contiband cotton proceeds. He joked at the south paying for it's own destrution. He had a spy network in the field and relaying information as early as Pea Ridge, March of 1862.Gen. Philip Sheridan who was a part of the Army of the Cumberland used spies latter in his career without a doubt. I'm not sure how he knew but, he did try to warn the impending Mufreesboro battle Dec.31,1862 on deaf ears.I'm probally here because his men were ready.Dodge started his interest when he was Post commander of Rolla, MO. in late 1861.He had strong ties to Railroad and had business with young lawyer for the railroad named A.Lincoln before the war as well as after. McClellan had ties prewar to a Chicago railroads that is how Pinkerton,a railroad detective, became his spy network. The whole war had a system in place.
Unless you stumble on something that would pin point to a specific document at a specific time you would have to hire a private researcher to go through NARA, Dept. of the Cumberland records.I would think it would have an index.Possibly there is a way to buy the index from them.Check Provost records. If you could point to something NARA would probally send copies, you being Kin.I would guess they have a file or are at least in a file. You could always go there and research yourself.Maybe Jim could find a way for his researchers to do it at a cost more reasonable.Private researchers are expensive. I'ld click on the trailor at the top of this page and ask them.
Could you give me the full title, author and year published of the book you mentioned?I would like to read it if I can find.Good Luck
