Andrew Jackson Paris/Confederate?

Andrew Jackson Paris supposedly enlisted in the Confederate service at Knoxville, Tn. I believe he was from Warm Springs, Madison Co. N.C. I can remember as a small boy, there was this old rifle with bayonet attached at one of my cousins house. Recently having renewed my interest in the Civil War, I ask her what ever happened to the old rifle and to whom it belonged? She stated that it had belonged to her great grandfather and her step dad had traded it off for a little liquor years ago! She ask me if I remembered the notches that were carved in the stock? I did but can only assume the significance of such. She remarked how the old rifle would have been such a wonderful keepsake for all the direct descendents! I agree but that is only one of many sad stories that exist. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thank, Jim Harmon
