Re: Fort Randolph and Belle of St Louis

Thanks - the reference to this incident was in the papers of Dr. BJD Irwin who was in charge of the Federal Hospitals in Memphis from 1863 through 1865. In the summer of 1864 Irwin married the daughter of one of his surgeons, Daniel Stahl of Quincy Illinois. Irwin listed the incident under "combat actions" in his career summary (along with Shiloh, Cornith and the battle of Richmond KY in 1862). I'll have to pull the string a little more on Irwin's role in this incident. Perhaps he was traveling to St. Louis en route to Quincy or to visit the medical offices in St. Louis. Thanks again. John
