The Tennessee in the Civil War Message Board

Middle TN CWRT August 2008 Mtg.

The next meeting of the Middle Tennessee CWRT will be at 7 PM on Tuesday August 19, 2008 at Bradley Academy. This meeting will feature one of our group discussions. This month we will tackle the topic of Cavalry in the Civil War.

Many people, including well-read Civil War enthusiasts barely understand the true role of cavalry in the Civil War. That arm produced some of the most mythologized figures of the war with a heavy focus on daring raids behind enemy lines. Is that all there is to know?

The cavalry, and its close cousin the mounted infantry, played a large and often overlooked role in the outcome of numerous campaigns and battles. In fact, at Nashville in 1864 it was Union cavalry that won one of the most decisive battles of the conflict.

We will examine the strengths and weaknesses of Civil War cavalry, and look at the changes in strategy and tactics as the conflict raged on. We will look to the leaders and troopers on both sides to gain a fresh perspective on the true impact of the mounted arm on the outcome of the Civil War.

The Middle Tennessee Civil War Round Table meets every third Tuesday of the month at Bradley Academy, located on Academy Street in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Membership applications are available at each meeting. Membership costs $10 per year for individuals and $15 for families. All meetings are open to the public regardless of membership status. Each meeting will include time for interested parties to share stories and memorabilia from the Civil War era with the membership.
