OUR SPEAKER AND TOPIC:

The Battle of West Harpeth River -

Greg Wade, founder of the new Franklin, TN Civil War Roundtable will present a program on the Battle of West Harpeth River for the September, 2008 meeting of the Clarksville Civil War Roundtable.

The Battles of Nashville and Franklin in late November and mid-December, 1864, are well known among even casual Civil War buffs and historians. However, few know of the drama of the days following the Confederate collapse at Nashville. With the Confederate retreat towards Alabama came a number of "battles" including one of the largest cavalry charges in American history, with bravery resulting in several Medals of Honor awards and further horror for those living due to the fighting and severe cold. The running clash of two exhausted armies would culminate at the Battle of the West Harpeth River.

Greg Wade will discuss some of the unusual facts about that cold, foggy and intense day in December 1864. This battle enabled the Army of Tennessee to escape and caused the pursuing Union Army to wonder just how much longer this war would drag on.

Greg Wade is a graduate of MTSU who currently works for Traveler’s Insurance Company in the Construction Division. Greg is the founder of the new Franklin. TN Civil War Roundtable and has been an active historian and preservationist through his associations with Franklin’s Charge and Save the Franklin Battlefield, just to name a few.
