You would do well to get copies of this officer's military service file. Just about all the specifics about what happened will appear there. Balch would have had no connection to Hagan's 3rd Alabama Cavalry. The regiment was known in the field as Forrest's Cavalry Battalion or Regiment during much of 1862 --
