Carter was a Brigader in command of Maney's Brigade at Franklin. He was mortally wounded there. Maney was the brigade's commander for nearly the whole war but I don't believe he remained in service at the time of Franklin & Nashville. I'm not sure who commanded Maney's Brigade at Nashville, possibly H.R. Feild.
